FAQs of Cryopreservation
What are stem cells? From where are they obtained?
Stem cells are basics of human life. They have the capacity to differentiate in all types of cells in human body, and also have capacity of self renewal. Stem cells can be obtained from embryo, cord blood, cord tissue, placenta, milk teeth, bone marrow, peripheral blood, menstrual blood, adipose tissue, breast milk and urine.
Why should stem cells be preserved?
- As stem cells have capacity to differentiate in all types of cells, stem cells can be used in the future for treating lots of life threatening diseases. They have the capacity to regenerate diseased tissue of the body, thus they not only cure the disease but also help the affected part to function properly.
- If one's own preserved stem cells are used to cure the disease then there is less chance of Graft Versus Host reaction.
- It has been proved that stem cells can be used in tissue engineering to prepare tissue engineered organs.
How do you preserve stem cells?
In our well equipped laboratory, stem cells are isolated from umbilical cord blood in Clean room of class-10,000 and preserved at -196°C in liquid phase of Nitrogen in specially designed cryo tubes.
How are the stem cells processed from cord blood?
Stem cells are isolated by a standard procedure that has been developed by Stem Plus Cryopreservation.
What is cryopreservation?
The process of cooling and storing cells, tissues, or organs at very low temperatures to maintain their viability. For example, the use of liquid nitrogen to store stem cells at -196°C.
Is it different than normal refrigeration?
Normal refrigeration temperature is around -20°C but cryopreservation is done at -196°C much lower than the normal refrigeration.
Are there any other companies doing this type of banking?
Private cord blood banking began in 1992 and since then, there have been many banking companies functioning in this field.
Why only Stem Plus?
- Stem Plus has developed a unique process of isolating stem cells from the sample that is received. We are the only company which isolates Very Small Embryonic like Stem Cells (VSELS).
- We store stem cells at lowest possible cost with the better quality and services.
Is collection of cord blood painful?
No, collection of specimen is simple, harmless and painless both to mother and the baby.
Who collects the cord blood? Is collection of cord blood charged?
In case of cord blood, sample is collected by the doctor himself or the attending nurse in the kit provided by Stem Plus Cryopreservation.
What are the different tests performed after collection of cord blood?
After collection of cord blood; HLA test, virological tests, bacteriological tests, blood grouping and cross matching are done.
